Yes! We nurture the “Whole Child” in the Children’s House (ages 3-6) by providing a curriculum that focuses on Practical Life Skills, Grace and Courtesy, Sensory Studies, Cultural Studies, Geography, Mathematics, Reading and Writing Development, and The Arts. Learning occurs in the most natural environment where students will have multiple opportunities to explore, create, and personalize their learning.

Montessori education for children under six emphasizes sensory learning and individualized, self-directed activities. Older children engage in independent research, field trips, and group projects, without traditional textbooks or schedules. Classes are mixed-age, fostering a community where older children teach younger ones, promoting collaboration over competition. This approach offers a unique, student-centered learning experience.

The Montessori method has successfully benefited children from various backgrounds, including those in standard classes, gifted students, and children with developmental, emotional, or physical challenges. However, not every child thrives in this setting. Some children, particularly those who are easily overwhelmed or prone to aggression, may not adapt as well to a Montessori program. The Montessori approach, with its multi-age classrooms and diverse student abilities and interests, allows each child to learn at their own speed. Students with advanced skills can find intellectual challenge without being isolated, while those needing extra support can progress comfortably without feeling rushed. In Montessori, every child is seen as gifted in their own way, with unique strengths that vary in degree. Meyer Montessori also provides opportunities for students to participate in the District’s PACE Gifted program, a pull-out program that offers further enrichment.

Although students are free to work at their own pace, they’re not doing it alone. The Montessori teacher closely observes each child and provides materials and activities that advance their learning by building on skills and knowledge already gained. This gentle guidance helps them master the challenge at hand—and protects students from moving on before they’re ready.

Montessori teachers are known as Guides as they do not "teach", instead they guide, observe, and create an environment of calm, order, and joy.  They know when to intervene and when to step back. They are experts at assisting children to find their own strengths and their own capabilities through the use of practical, self-correcting materials.

Montessori schools offer a comprehensive academic program similar to traditional schools, covering subjects like math, science, history, geography, and language. However, these subjects are taught in an integrated manner, connecting different parts of the curriculum. For example, studying a map of Africa might lead to exploration of art, history, and inventions of African nations, and then to ancient Egypt, including hieroglyphs and geometry. This approach highlights the interconnected nature of subjects and encourages deep exploration and curiosity in students.
